During an economic downturn jobs are hard to come by, and job selection interviews are few and far between, so each phase of the job process becomes more important. First you send out your meticulously prepared resume, after which you hope to get an initial interview, but there is no guarantee these days. What this means is that you need to make sure your qualifications for the job are exactly what are needed, and that your resume objective will stand out from most others. However, what you need to realize is that the whole purpose of the resume is to get that initial interview, and the objective of that initial interview is to make it through to the second interview.

That first interview has the goal of getting you a second interview, and so on. There may or may not be extra job interviews even after this, depending on the company and the job itself.

Now, how can you make sure that your resume and interview letter reaches the interview pile, and not the thrown away never-to-be-seen-again bin?

There are a few obvious tips here that have to be mentioned. First of all, examine your spelling and sentence structure, several times. It won't hurt to get a buddy to read through your resume looking for spelling mistakes, or grammatical errors, as it is very easy to skip these your self when you have been looking at the same document for hours.

A sure way to finish up in the discard pile is to send in a resume with spelling errors in it. Make sure all the information you give in your resume are totally accurate. You do not want to be discovered to be stretching the truth somewhere during the interview procedure.

Replying with thank you letters is a good way of keeping your name in front of the organization staff, and obviously, you can send your thanks after each phase of the interview process in the hope you will go further and get that second interview.
This involves writing to each person who has interviewed you, and you should make each letter individual and a little different to all the others. Now, it used to be that the letters were always mailed, but nowadays e-mail are used more often, and it is becoming the more acceptable form of connection. You could always consult the secretary, or the person who set up your job interview how the company feels about receiving emails, and go from there. Obviously, your interview letter and thank you letter needs to be error free as well as your resume, so spend the additional time getting this correct.
